You may place a bid in the auction folder at the Club’s bar. The paintings are on display in the dining room. If you are prepared to bid more than the previous bidder for any work you should enter your name and your bid. Thereafter a live auction will be held during the course of the Club’s Curry Night on 3^rd February when the sales will be closed and the successful bidders announced.

Presentation to Douglas Park Golf Club

Douglas Park Golf Club was delighted to accept a gift of a painting of a view of Turnberry Golf Course donated by Bashir Maan not only an enthusiastic and respected member of Douglas Park Golf Club but also was one of the most respected Councillors in the City of Glasgow. His varying political career in Glasgow as a JP, Councillor, Magistrate, Court Judge and Bailie spanned 33 years. He retired from politics in 2003 having completed his 4 year term as Convener of the Strathclyde Joint Police Board when on retiring from this post was presented with the painting by the Chief Constable of Strathclyde.

Club Captain Colin McEwen commented “ I am absolutely delighted to accept this painting on behalf of the Club particularly in that it holds a special memory for Bashir. To donate it to the Club for others to enjoy is a very kind gesture and will be much appreciated by our members.”

Please note that all League Matches must be played by 29 Jan 12. Refer to the Rules on the Notice Board for conditions of the competition.

In particular, competitors should note the stipulation that all matches must be played in all but exceptional circumstances to ensure that those teams who have played all of their matches are not disadvantaged.

If only one person from a team can make an arranged date then the match should still go ahead, rather than not being played.

It was made clear to those entering the Winter League that they should not do so if it was likely that they could not meet their match commitments. Please try to play all matches by the due date in the spirit of the competition, if at all possible.

The Douglas Park "Eagle" Open Mixed Foursomes celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2012.

The unique and impressive bronze eagle trophy, designed by Mr F. Malcolm Robertson of Glasgow School of Art in reference to the Roman Eagle emblem of the Club, was commissioned by and presented to the Club by Past Captain John and Past Ladies' Captain Jean Watson in 1972. One of the pioneering events of its kind, the tournament continues to attract competitors from far and wide. In order to retain this interest and in celebration of the tournament's special birthday, the prize fund has been substantially enhanced.

If you do decide to play it is at your own risk and you should exercise extreme caution. You should not enter any of the wooded areas.

COURSE CLOSED - STORM DAMAGE

The Course Manager has reported that up to 200 trees have come down or are in a dangerous condition on the course, due to the recent storms. Consequently, the course is NOW CLOSED and will remain so until it can be re-assessed from a safety point of view.

Pictures of the damage will be posted in the Clubhouse in the next day or two.

Please be sure to check with the Pro’s shop, or the Blog, to confirm the availability of the course prior to arranging to play.

Visiting Golfers and Members' Liability Insurance

The Committee are pleased to inform the members that as from 25th November, 2011, an SGU approved insurance scheme has been put in place to provide personal liability insurance for all members and visiting golfers. This is in addition to the Club insurance policy already in operation. Due to the timing of the policy set up, the cost of the members’ premium has been paid in full by the club from subscription income. In future years, this will be built into the annual subscription fees. Cover for all members is mandatory.

A Summary of Cover and the Insurance Scheme Schedule details are on display in the Locker Rooms. The cover includes, amongst other items, Personal Liability Insurance, whilst playing at Douglas Park or temporarily at any other golf club (i.e. worldwide cover) and Hole In One Cover. Specific cover has also been put in place for Visiting Golfers and Members’ Guests.

The Summary of Cover is also produced as a credit card sized plastic card, which is available for each member. Members should contact the Secretary to obtain their copy of the card. The Insurers recommend that each member has a copy of this cover, but it does not invalidate the cover if a member does not have a copy. The card includes the Policy Number and a telephone number if any assistance is required with a claim.

Greens Project + Course Improvement Plan

GREENS PROJECT
Work is progressing well on the greens with work starting on the 12^th this week. The 15^th is due to be completed next week and the 13^th has been completed with some changes required.
Unfortunately, the 13^th could not be completed as outlined in the drawings, with the green still sloping from front left to back right as before – although the steep downslope at the front of the green is no more. This was due to the quality of the soil removed being unsuitable to raise the back of the green substantially. A new trench drain runs across the front of the green approach to collect the majority of the surface water running towards the green and there is a slight rise at the front of the green which will improve the look and create a valley at the approach to take water away from the green. The front left of the approach requires to be re-lifted and laid to increase this rise to match that at the front right.
The 15^th is on course to be constructed as planned with a hump to the left of the green and extent of the green reduced on the left hand side. The front left bunker is to be re-constructed and moved to slightly encroach on the left side of the green. The right hand bunker is to be slightly extended towards the green also.
The 14^th medal tee is to be extended and there is likely to be enough soil to create a new tee behind the 16^th medal tee, meaning the existing 16^th gents tee can be removed with yellow tees moved to where the medal tees currently sit.

An Evening in Memory of Jean Watson

John Watson and his family held an evening in memory of his mother Jean Watson who died earlier this year at the age of 88. Approximately 100 guests attended the evening on Saturday 19th November. The guests included former Curtis Cup Players Belle Robertson and Wilma Leburn (Aitken), many D&A Past Captains and members from Douglas Park Golf Club.
John, Susan (Jean's daughter) and D&A and Douglas Park's Elinor Grant all recounted their happy memories.
Jean Watson who had been six times Lady Champion of Douglas Park Golf Club, Douglas Park's Ladies Captain in 1965, D&A County Captain 1973 - 74 and on many occasions a member of the D&A County Team. She was the winner of the West of Scotland Ladies Veteran's Championship in 1974, 1978,1979,1983,and 1984 and finalist in the Scottish Ladies Veterans Championship in 1979. For 30 years she performed the duties of Handicap Secretary to the Ladies Section.
In 1965 Jean won the LGU Gold Medal for Scotland at Gleneagles. She was Captain of the Scottish Ladies' Veteran Golf Association in 1985 and 1986 and Jean played for the Scottish Vets for 10 years between 1976 and 1986.
In recognition of her many playing successes, her service to the Club, and the honour she brought by her membership of the Scottish and National ruling bodies, Jean was elected an Honorary Member in 1979.

Success for Junior Girl

The Highland Spring Junior Masters is Scotland’s most exciting and largest free-to-enter golf event for young golfers.

One of our Junior Girls Alex Mennie qualified and joined 51 boys and 29 other girls – aged 16 or under on 1 January 2011 - in the final shoot-out of the high profile handicap-based national championship at Gleneagles on 9th October.

Alex who is an away member of Douglas Park, home club Elie, came 3rd.

This is a prestigious annual event organised by the SGU - well done Alex!

CAPTAIN’S NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2011

Dear Members

Another summer season is all but finished, although some might well say “What summer season?” The weather indeed being a mixed bag starting with a sunny April, going through the rainiest August for a long time and finishing with a reasonably fair September. It didn’t dampen the ardent golfer though and most medals and competitions were completed, even the Douglas Park Eagle, renowned for its “bad weather day”, was successfully played this year.

There are however, concerns for the future of some of the mixed competitions. Some were cancelled this year due to lack of support but we are hoping to perhaps present them differently next year to try and encourage more members to participate.

Like the weather the Douglas Park teams had a mixed bag of success with the Donald Cameron team in particular having a successful season. This is one of the youngest teams ever to be selected for the Douglas Park Donald Cameron team and bodes well for future successes in years to come. These players came through the Junior Development group

convened by John Telfer and apart from that success the group has produced 1 full Professional, 2 Assistant Professionals and 3 on scholarships to the USA. Long may this success continue and the Junior Development group continues to get the necessary support from the Club.

As the season progressed the hard work which Drew and his team deployed must be recognized. The course condition improved and consequently the playing condition was excellent over the season, even given the amount of rain that had to be absorbed. The greens held up extremely well, even the “last three” of the project, however the latter part of the season proved that it is necessary to get them up to the same standard as the others.

This of course is happening thanks to the negotiating skills of Ian Brodie who has arranged and organized pledges from a good number of members to finance the work.

This work will continue from October through till December and with fair weather should be completed by then. Hopefully everyone took the chance of viewing the plans for the reconstruction of the last three greens and is looking forward, as I am, to playing on them next season.

It will mean of course that there will be some disruption to the course until the new playing season next March. However every effort will be made to offer as many holes to play as possible albeit that there will always be at least three temporary greens. Rules for the winter league will be adjusted this year accordingly to accommodate the course and players will be informed when the draw is made and presented.

There has been a steady flow of visiting parties and member guests and it is gratifying to hear that all consider Douglas Park to be an excellent course to play as is the standard of hospitality and thanks are due to Lisa and her Staff for maintaining this high standard.

It has been pointed out that the dress code and etiquette expected at Douglas Park is sometimes a bit lax by guests and visiting parties and therefore it would be prudent at this stage to remind members that they are responsible for their guests and parties and should be reminding them of the dress code and etiquette expected at Douglas Park both on the course and in the main lounge. Your co-operation in advising your guests would be much appreciated and will help avoid embarrassing confrontations with Staff and members.

The upturn in clubhouse function usage by visiting parties continues to grow and the feedback to Lisa and her Staff is very good. We would like this upturn to be complemented however by usage of members. To that end, a survey was circulated by House for members to complete. This information will generate some new ideas which hopefully will give rise to more members using the Lounge facility during the day, in the evening and of course, after medals.

There is a series of social events for the members over the autumn and winter seasons and members should be checking the notice board for information on these.

Now that the Clubhouse has been mentioned there are a group of members whose actions are hopefully seen and appreciated by other members and guests and these are the ladies that arrange flowers in the foyer and stair landings. Your arrangements brighten up the Clubhouse and are much appreciated, thank you very much for efforts.

Professionals

It has been a busy season for Robert and Alistair. Apart from their teaching commitments and shop business they have continued to be at the forefront of last year’s initiative to have all tee times booked by members either by telephone or in the shop. To further improve the facility for members the Committee has been piloting an on-line booking system called Bookitee. This has proved a success and it is now available to members. Members should follow the Bookitee link on the Douglas Park web site and register for the scheme as instructed. Members will be required to nominate a user name and will be given a personal password and once this is received they are free to use the on-line system of booking. It should be noted however that the rules that apply to shop and telephone bookings also apply to on line ones i.e. only one booking can be made in a day and there can only be three live bookings in any eight days. Once a booking is made only that member can delete it so it follows that if a situation occurs where you cannot play it would be prudent to do so timeously, if possible, to free up that tee time.

All three systems for booking tee times are for friendly games and ties only and not as yet for medals.

Finance

We made a conscious decision this year not to outlay money on an open day to attract new members and this certainly has not detracted from gaining new members. Although it is normal to lose members at the start of the season this has been compensated by attracting a similar number of new members over the season despite being one of the few Clubs which still has a joining fee, a fee that I feel remains justified since I believe it helps to ensure the loyalty of new members to remain at Douglas Park.

We cannot however be complacent in our search for new members and the Committee is currently considering initiatives to attract new members in all categories for next year.

You will have read in the Financial report for the SGM that the Club is continuing in the right direction and that a start has been made to the maintenance of our buildings which is long overdue. Apart from the cost for necessary repairs under Health and Safety the Lounge has been decorated and Phase 1 of the Ladies washroom has been completed.

A budget for more upgrades to the buildings has been agreed and hopefully the proposed projects will start as soon as possible.

We are still very much aware however of the need to be careful.

Fundraising

You will be aware that among the Douglas Park members are several artists and they have kindly offered 12 paintings depicting various scenes and seasons of Douglas Park to the Club. These framed paintings will soon be put up for auction at the Club so please keep your eye on the notice board for more details.

These paintings will also be used to produce Calendars and desktop calendars for 2012 and one will be chosen to produce a Christmas card. This is a superb initiative and a great way to publicise Douglas Park and worthy of the full support of the members.

Winter Season

I should like to take this opportunity now that the summer season is over, of thanking all the team managers, event managers and their assistants for their commitment and support in running these teams and events offered at Douglas Park. It is very much appreciated. Thank you.

Although the course might be restricted over the winter season I hope you all enjoy your winter golf and good luck to all those members competing in the winter competitions.

NEW GREENS' WORK

It is intended that the full course will be available as much as possible, and that any disruption will only be to the 3 individual greens.

House of Colour Ladies Social Evening Success

The ladies section held a social evening on Friday 30th September.

The theme was -- THE HOUSE OF COLOUR.

Maggie Rutherford's sister Anne Holley from www.houseofcolour.com was the guest speaker who enlightened us all with how to step forward confidently, knowing that clothes and accessories you have chosen show the best you. Maggie was her assistant and many admitted that perhaps we have about 85% of our wardrope that we never use !!

Captain Gillian Hendry welcomed about 45 ladies to the evening, Vice Captain Lynda Smith gave the vote of thanks and with the help of Social Convenor Janet Dow they were able to raise approximately £300 for MacMillan Cancer Support.

A buffet meal, some refreshments and much chat finished off a very enjoyable evening.

CAR PARK - 5TH & 6TH OCTOBER

A section of the car park will be blocked off on Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th of October. This is to allow a BBC filming unit to be based there.

Members are asked to ensure they utilise all the remaining space by parking carefully and responsibly. As a last resort, the Committee and Officials spaces may be used. The disabled spaces must still be left to be used only by registered disabled users.

Andra' Kirkaldy Trophy

The final of the Andra Kirkaldy Cup was played in pouring rain at Bishopbriggs Golf Club on Sunday 25th September against the 2010 winners,Hayston.

The Douglas Park past Captains' team started well but were eventually beaten by the narrow margin - 2 down.

David Wightman & John Telfer lost 2 down followed by Jack MacIntyre & Willie McMaster with the same score.

Nicol McLean & Hugh MacIntyre gave the team some hope when they scored a 2 up victory but the final pairing of Jim Fergusson & Dougie Samson could only manage a halved match thus leaving Hayston the victors 2 up.

I would like to thank all team members who played in the competition for their enthusiasm and support and now look forward to 2012 when,hopefully,we will go one better and lift the trophy.

SHOES IN GENTLEMEN'S LOCKER ROOM

Gentlemen are reminded that the areas under the benches are for the SHORT TERM storage of shoes etc while members are on the course, or in the clubhouse. Items should be stored in your locker, or removed from the Clubhouse, at the end of each visit.

The amount of items left under the benches on a long term basis limits the space available for other members and visitors to utilise, as well as causing unsightly clutter within the area.

Therefore, on the morning of Wednesday 5th October all items under the benches will be removed and stored as Lost Property. Members using the club on that day should ensure they store their items elsewhere.

As with other Lost Property stored outwith the Locker Room, please contact the Secretary if you wish to reclaim any item. Items will be disposed of after a reasonable period.

Scottish Vets Jamboree

The Scottish Vets Jamboree was held on Sunday to Tuesday of this week at Blairgowrie Golf Club
The Greensomes Competition was played over the Lansdowne Course on Tuesday

Carol Fell and Helen Faulds retained the Tony Moffat Memorial Trophy for the best Scratch Score of 78 (3 over the SSS OF 75) and the Beddows Quaich for 1st handicap 78-7-71.

Heather Anderson and Lorna Bennett who are both in the Scottish Senior International Team were runners up for the scratch award with an 80.

Helen was elected as Captain of the Scottish Vets at the AGM on the Monday evening and she is also is the Captain the Scottish Seniors Team that will be playing in the Home Internationals at Tramore Golf Club in Ireland next week.

Following a successful pilot exercise involving several members of the Committee, Douglas Park is now launching our Internet Golf Reservation Service – known as Bookitee.
This service allows members to book and check tee time availability over the Internet and get instant on-screen and email confirmation of their booking.

This booking service is an integral part of the club's live computerised booking system, hence tee time availability is accurate and up to date. It is in addition to the existing options of booking times via the Pro’s shop by phone or in person.
It is for non-competition times only.

The following key rules should be noted :
You need a valid email address to register
Members can book up to 8 days in advance (as currently)
Members can only make 1 booking in any 1 day
Members can only have 3 advance bookings at any one time
Competitions should be booked using the same process as before
Members can still book by calling the pro shop

Phase 6 - New greens project - update

On the 3^rd of October 2011, the final phase of the club’s green reconstruction project will commence.
The 12^th, 13^th and 15^th greens are the last to be reconstructed with a sand based make-up which will help with drainage and the quality of the putting surface.

A “New Greens” Committee was set-up to create the new designs, consisting of the 2 Captains, Vice Captains, Course Committee, Club Professional Robert Irvine, Head Greenkeeper Drew McKechnie and club members David Carrick and Helen Faulds, both very experienced and accomplished golfers.

The 13^th and 15^th green designs are very restricted due to their position on top of the protected Antonine Wall, however the 12^th provides the opportunity of a complete re-design of the green and surrounding area.

Andra' Kirkaldy Trophy

The Douglas Park Past Captains' team recorded an excellent victory in the semi-final of the Andra Kirkaldy Trophy when they defeated old adversaries,Lenzie, by the margin 4 up.

David Wightman and John Telfer gave the team a marvellous start with a 4 up win followed by Jack MacIntyre and Willie McMaster with a hard fought 1 up win.

Nicol McLean and Hugh MacIntyre kept the score moving in Douglas Park's favour with a 2 up win.Jim Fergusson and Dougie Samson unfortunately lost 3 down but if there was ever a good time to record a loss this was it as the 7 up recorded by the first 3 matches gave a comfortable cushion for an overall win.

The team now meet Hayston in the final to be played on Sunday 25th September at Bishopbriggs GC at 2.40 pm

At Edzell Golf Club on Monday 8th August, Sheena Gardiner and Lesley Irvine were the winners of the Peugeot Coronation Foursomes Final with a Stableford score of 41. Well done Sheena and Lesley !

FAMILY FOURSOMES DAY

A record entry of 48 teams ( 96 players ) competed on Sunday 14th August for the Family Foursomes Trophy.The competition,which was inaugurated 31 years ago by Past Captain Colin Robertson, is open to Gents, Ladies and Juniors in all family relationships (except husband and wife ) with a member able to play with a guest.

Around 15 different combinations took part involving grandparents and parents with sons and daughters, siblings,aunts and uncles, cousins and in-laws. Fortunately it was a dry sunny day following several days of heavy rain which had closed the course and over 200 members and their families were able to enjoy an excellent Bar-B-Q on the terrace provided by Lisa and her team. Great credit must also be given to Drew McKechnie and his team for resurrecting the course after the floods and to the Match Committee for organising what must be one of the more complicated events on their busy schedule.

Hopefully the success of this year's event will encourage even more family combinations to enter next year and consolidate the valuable family spirit in the Club.

MacIntyre Shotgun 2011

The MacIntyre Shotgun Fourball Competition was successfully played on Saturday 13th August with every hole occupied when the "hooter" sounded at 9.00am.

Following the deluge which hit the course 3 days before the event it was a miracle that the competition was played and sincere thanks must go the Drew and his team for the excellent condition of the course.

There were a number of excellent scores with the winners after countback being Hash Razapour & David Sloan with a net 62.
In second place were Bob McKinnon & Jeremy Kemp (62) and third were Jim McManus & Alan Cunningham (64).

Thanks are also due to Lisa and her team firstly for the very welcome coffee at 8.30am and for coping with the rush of golfers arriving at the same time in the clubhouse.

Hugh & Jack MacIntyre are delighted that the competition continues to be so well supported and wish to thank all participants who entered.

New Greens – the process to date

Negotiations have been ongoing between ourselves and Historic Scotland to get a Schedule of Consent to allow us to redevelop the 13^th and 15^th greens which lie on the Antonine Wall (the last Schedule of Consent given to us was only for the archaeological survey in 2008 and not for permission to undertake any redevelopment).
This involved producing work programmes proposed by our contractors (Fairways) for those greens and an archaeological project design submission to Historic Scotland.
I am pleased to announce that Final Consent from Historic Scotland and the Scottish Ministers has now been granted and the redevelopment of the 13^th, 15^th and 12^thgreens can proceed as planned on the 3^rd of October this year.
During this time the following timetable was arranged and implemented:
June/July
1. Set up of a “new greens” committee - this was made up of the 2 Captains and Vice Captains, the Course Committee, Drew our Course Manager, Robert our Professional and 2 of our very experienced members David Carrick and Helen Faulds.
2. Walk out to the 3 greens, discussed possibilities and ideas.
3. Planning session to finalise the new design proposals
4. Greens Convener Craig Turner given the task of producing drawings for each green
5. “New Greens” committee to peruse the drawings and make adjustments if required
August
6. Final drawings produced
7. Drawings to be discussed with Fairways to ensure that the ideas are within the planned budget for each green
8. Drawings to be made available to members for perusal and comment—the drawings will be set up in the lounge.
To date 1 to 6 has been achieved and I hope to meet with Fairways before Friday 19^th August. Provided there are no problems the drawings will then be placed in the lounge.
Prior to you looking at drawings I should remind you that the redevelopment of the 13^th and 15^th in terms of new design and shape is restricted by the fact that they are on the Antonine Wall, however adjustments have been made which should make for improvement. The 12^th offers no such restrictions and a total redesign is being put forward as the drawing will show.
The redevelopment is due to start on the 3rd October and it goes without saying I am hoping for some kind weather. There will be, of course, unavoidable disruption to the course during this programme of work however every effort will be made to open as many holes as possible.
Day to day information will be advised via the notice board.

Due to the works at Birch View, there will be disruption to the club driveway on Monday 15th August , between 9.30 a.m. and 11.00 a.m.

The drive may be totally closed to vehicles for periods of up to 15 minutes during this time. Members should ensure they leave enough time to reach the course if they require to.

The Course Manager will be on site to monitor the situation throughout this period. This work is an unavoidable stage of bringing the Birch View repairs to a conclusion, and the Club hopes that members will not be overly inconvenienced.

Douglas Park GC, Ladies Committee had their annual outing at Rowallan Castle Golf Course today. 24 Ladies participated in teams of 3 and played a Stableford Waltz. Although, most thought the course was quite long and many visited numerous bunkers, the fantastic weather helped make it a very enjoyable day.

DOUGLAS PARK GENTS SENIORS OPEN 05/07/11

Another successful Open Tournament, 128 competitors took part vying for the Handicap Trophy and Scratch Tankard and for the three prizes in each Age Category, 60-64, 65-69 and 70+.
There were competitors from as far afield as Newbiggin GC Northumberland, Ashton and Lea GC Preston, Cowal GC, Millport, Innellan GC, Leven Golfing Society.
Everyone was very enthusiastic about the Course and how well it looked, a thank you to the Greenkeeper and his staff and they were also complimentary about the catering and bar staff, Professional and Assistant Professional and to those who worked in the Match Office.
The Handicap Trophy was won by Mr M McGuigan Clober GC, and the Scratch Tankard was won by Mr H McLean DPGC, and well done to those that won in their Age Categories.
I personally would like to thank the following for their assistance in the Match Office, Mrs Elinor Grant, Mrs Alison Nicolson, Mr Ronald Murison, Past Captain Mr Irvine Lumsden, Mr Iain Miller,Captain Colin McEwen, Mr Alec Cordiner, Mr George Roberts, and to Roddy Gillespie for use of the Match Office.

The Andra Kirkaldy Cup is a 4-ball competition with 4 pairs playing to the 18th hole and is open to Past Captains of the Club.

On Saturday 2nd July the Douglas Park team were home to Sandyhills and registered a 1 up victory in a very tight match.

The first pairing of David Wightman & Charles Strong were,at one time, 6 down but managed to birdie the 16th & 17th to finish 4 down.

Willie McMaster & Jack MacIntyre almost managed to balance the scores when they finished 3 up.

Nicol McLean & Hugh MacIntyre finished 1 up as did Jim Fergusson & Dougie Samson which gave the team an overall win.

Douglas Park are now at home to Lenzie in the semi-final of the Cup.

I should like to thank and congratulate Team Manager Hugh MacIntyre and Assistant Manager Angus Watson for a very successful Cameron League season. It was a privilege to follow the team to their matches which were all extremely tight and congratulations must be given to the team members for their tenacity in achieving their wins.

Donald Cameron Team News

On Sunday 26th June the Donald Cameron team played their second home match against Dullatur. Chris McManus and Angus Carrick gave the team an excellent start with both recording wins. Following a halved match by Morris Brodie, Angus Watson and James Hendry ensured a home victory and this was rounded off by Mathew Anderson's win which gave the team an overall victory by 5.5 matches to 2.5.

On Wednesday 29th June the team entertained Glasgow Killermont.
Our new Club Champion,Chris McManus put up a brave fight against a former Scottish internationalist Jonathon King but lost 2&1.

Angus Carrick and James Hendry both had good wins which were then followed by wins from Morris Brodie and David Carrick.Unfortunately the remaining 4 team members could not manage the requisite halved match which would have given DP overall victory and the match ended all square at 4 wins each.

The team amassed a total of 11 points which will probably see them runners up to Bearsden this season but in with a excellent chance to gain promotion next year.

Angus Watson has to be thanked for all his input as Assistant Team Manger and the team members also wished to thank Captain Colin McEwen for his support and encouragement throughout the campaign.

A 4 man team drawn from the Donald Cameron team will represent the Club in the DCL foursomes competition at Balmore starting Monday 4th July.

Course maintenance

When we ask members to replace divots we don't usually mean a divot on a green!!

The photograph below,supplied by Stephen Wightman, shows a large divot on the 10th green.

Nobody would like this "blemish" to be on their putting line during a Medal - so can members please try to look after the fabric of the course. This type of damage to our course is just not acceptable.

Douglas Park 2011 Pro - Am

The 26th Douglas Park Golf Club Pro-Am was played 22nd June.
The Pro Am is a charitable event, and this year’s supported charity was the “Way Ahead Group”.
This year we’ve raised approx. £1,800 for this charity.
Photograph below shows winners of the team prize led by DP member Andrew McNamara and sponsored by (BDO LLP Accountancy) with a combined gross score of 118.

The team professional Graham Fox (East Kilbride Golf Club) who was playing with this winning team shared the main competition prize with fellow professional Scott Henderson (Kings Links)
with a scratch score 65.

MRS JEAN K WATSON

Douglas Park members were saddened to learn of the passing of Jean Watson, pictured above with her fellow Honorary Member Belle Robertson M.B.E.
Jean died peacefully at Grant House, Grantown-on Spey on the 11 June 2011 in her 88th year. Jean’s contribution to Douglas Park was immeasurable and she was, as a former Lady Captain, an excellent ambassador for Douglas Park. The Club owes a great debt of gratitude to Jean, not only as a great player and Champion, but also for her total commitment and generosity to the Club. This commitment was recognised by her being made an honorary member of the Club in 1979. John Watson O.B.E hopes in the fullness of time to hold an evening of remembrance for his mother at Douglas Park.

Douglas Park will remember Jean Watson as one of the great Ladies of the Club.

Donald Cameron Team News

The Donald Cameron team played their first home match against local rivals Milngavie and managed to win in a closely fought contest by the narrowest of margins - 4.5 to 3.5.

Chris McManus led the team and won his match 2 & 1.Losses by Clark Nelson & James Hendry - both at the 17th were followed by excellent wins for Angus Watson & Morris Brodie.David Eadie had a halved match but Greg Balfour lost at the 16th.

This left the teams tied at 3.5 matches each with all the pressure on Andrew McNamara who was all square playing the last hole. In a nervy ending (certainly for the team manager) Andrew holed a tricky 4 foot downhill putt to win the game and the overall match for Douglas Park.

The team's next match is at home to Dullatur on Sunday 26th June at 2.30pm.

77 Ladies and 5 Junior Girls played in the Lady Captain's Day on Friday 10th June. The 9 club stableford was played in sunny but windy conditions, with this being reflected in the scoring.
7 senior Ladies hotly contested the annual putting competition with Ellen Dunn emerging as this year's winner.
Junior girl Alex Mennie won the Primrose cup and a fine buffet was enjoyed by all those who attended in the evening.

LADIES' INVITATIONAL GREENSOME 3RD JUNE

It was hard to believe. The weathermen forecast cloudless blue skies, sunshine and temperatures of 23 degrees and it came true. The ladies were clad in a riot of summer colours. It was imperative to wear their brightest and lightest. The opportunity may not recur. Starters Irvine Lumsden and Jim Fergusson conducted the ladies off with panache. The sun shone. Everyone was happy . Witticisms bounced back and forth from starters to players. The ladies took all the time in the world. The starters could do nothing about it. The sun continued to shine. The visiting guests were delighted. There were dainty ladylike refreshments at the gazebo. Strawberries had been ordered, brazenly challenging the sun to shine. It was a glimpse of summer as it is expected to be. Some Ladies played well , some less so but everyone enjoyed the day. Drew had presented a course in tiptop condition. Lisa charmed the visitors with her salad platters. The Ladies Section Committee breathed a sigh of satisfaction and relief.

Following a disappointing defeat away to Bearsden the Donald Cameron team rose to the occasion when beating Hilton Park on their own course by the margin 5 matches to 3. James Hendry was given the honour of leading the team for the first time and showed that that trust was not misplaced by defeating the Hilton Park club champion 4 & 2.Angus Carrick followed by winning a tight match against a former Douglas Park member Dave McClement by 2 & 1.

Angus Watson kept the momentum going with a 4 & 3 win and the final two team members, Andrew McNamara and Morris Brodie both recorded wins.

The team have now won two of their three away matches which puts them in a strong position in the league.

The next match is at home to Milngavie on Wednesday 15th June.

SGU / SLGA AMALGAMATION

The voting took place for this on Wednesday 25th May (SLGA) and Thursday 26th May (SGU).

At the meeting of the SLGA the clubs and counties voted IN FAVOUR of the amalgamation by a majority of 93%.

At the SGU meeting only Areas have a mandate, and they voted 10 - 6 AGAINST the amalgamation proposals. Therefore, the proposal in its current format has not received the required level of support and amalgamation can not proceed at this stage.

The SGU affiliated clubs were given the opportunity to vote on the proposal (although a non-counting vote as the Areas are the shareholders) and of the 295 who responded, 263 were in favour of the proposals. The SGU Board therefore believes the Areas have voted against the wishes of a majoirty of the clubs.

The SGU Board will continue to act in the best interests of Scottish Golf and will meet shortly to progress this important matter.

Douglas Park Ladies’ team beat Skelmorlie Ladies by 3 games to 2 at Douglas Park on Thursday 26^th May in round five of the Mail on Sunday Classic.

The result is as follows:-

Donald Cameron Team News

The Douglas Park Donald Cameron team played their first game of the new season on Wednesday evening away to Kirkintilloch.

On a very windy and sometimes wet night the team players showed great composure and self control in registering a great win by the margin 5 matches to 3.

Angus Carrick led the way with an exciting last hole victory over the Kirkintilloch Club Captain, Billy Campbell. Angus birdied the last two holes to win on the last green.

Clark Nelson and David Carrick suffered narrow defeats before the tide turned for DP when Chris McManus, Angus Watson and James Hendry ground out last hole victories. Morris Brodie lost his match but Mathew Anderson sealed the DP victory with again a last hole win.

In all 6 matches went to the last green with Douglas Park winning 5 of them.

The teams' next match is on Wednesday 1st June away to Bearsden and members wishing to attend would be made most welcome.
